IT HAPPENED SUDDENLY. I ASKED EVERYONE AROUND IF I WAS DEAD - MY STORY
THE RUSSIAN ROULETTE GAME
I was new in town and trying to find a place to worship on a Sunday morning. Then I began to hear some music with a lady’s voice singing my favorite worship song. It sounded like the church was not so far from where I lodged, so I decided to attend the service. After I walked about a hundred meters away from the hotel, the sound of music became louder and I discovered that I was just exactly behind the walls of the church and the gates were on the other street. Realizing that I had to go to the end of the road before I can join the next street I hissed because I had left a shorter way behind. I was happy when I discovered that there was a space between the walls of the church and that of the next tall building that one could use as a short-cut to join the next street, so I decided to use it.
The moment I started walking between the two walls I knew It was not a regular road. You wouldn’t dare to take the road at night. There was a wild looking guy standing against the wall along the road. Thank God I know so much about thug life; I used to be a drug addict and a hardened criminal. I have been jailed several times before I met Jesus. So I immediately changed my countenance and began to walk like a thug just to avoid being attacked. They must not sense that I was afraid if I wanted to leave unhurt.
There were these two young guys having a heated disagreement on how to share a large sum of money they got from loot the night before. As I approached, a third man, dark and heavily built, they called Black Hippo, walked up to them and shouted “There is no need to share the money, one of you can have it all” He dropped two wooden boxes on the floor and said. “In each box are two pistols, one is loaded and the other is not. Take one of the boxes and pick one of the guns for yourselves and pull the trigger against each other’s head at the same time. Anyone that lives will have the whole money”
.
At this point I slowed down to see what would happen because I know a game similar to what Big Hippo was introducing to the young men. It’s called Russian Roulette. I know it’s very bad and I wanted to stop the young men before they kill themselves because of greed and selfishness.
One of the young guys was already sweating profusely, not sure of what the outcome would be as he fought in his mind the temptation to go for the game. I could see his dilemma. His greed was getting the best of him. He was lost in his thoughts and he looked like someone in a trance.
So I went closer to him and said, Young man, can I help you decide? '' He snapped out of his trance and said “I will play the game” I shouted “why?” and he asked “Who are you?” ”I am a pastor and I want to help you” I replied. “If you are a true pastor then join your faith with mine and let me take the risk. Whatever will happen will happen.” I held him and said “ You are completely wrong bro, faith in God is not the same as gambling, you stup.. (I was going to say stupid young man because at this point I was mad at his foolish greed then I remembered I am a pastor and struggled to take out the “stupid” even though I knew it was the best adjective) do you realize It’s your life at stake and the reward here is not worth the risk? And by the way, though faith has an element of risk in it, it however has a definite good outcome which is guaranteed by the Word of God who made the promise. Faith does not fail but this game’s outcome depends on probability. You can not be sure of the outcome.
Why would you take such a risk on your life just because you want all the money for yourself? Why don’t you just agree to take half the money with the assurance of having your life intact.
And in the event that both of you pick up a loaded gun and blow up your brains, whose will all the money be?
At this point Big Hippo reached out for one of the guns and pointed it at ……
I know you’ll want to know what happened next and how the story ended, but let’s hold on for a while and get something right here. Your experiences in life might have forced you into believing that having faith in God is like a game of probability, I can very well relate with that. But please I want you to understand the following:
God’s faithfulness is not validated by your experiences: This has to be so because with our varied experiences in life, God would have been the most unstable, indecisive, undependable person ever known. This would have contradicted the personality of our never changing God. He is the same yesterday, today and forever according to Hebrews 13:8
Faith always works and if yours doesn't work, it is not faith in God: Most people give up faith just before their miracles arrive, others keep waiting on God out of ignorance to do something about their situation while God is actually waiting on them to take a step.
Don't get Confused. The Bible says:
“Now faith is the certainty of things hoped for, a proof of things not seen” Hebrew 11:1
You see? It says, when you have faith, you have CERTAINTY and you have PROOF of what you have not seen. Faith is the assurance you have for what you are hoping for. The intangible becomes tangible. This may sound like a mystery, but these parameters are guaranteed by the infallible word of God. This means your faith in God for anything must be anchored on the Word of God which always delivers on its promises. Gambling is not an expression of faith because it is not anchored on anything tangible.
The outcome of an act of faith is known beforehand. It is not a probability as in the game called greed.
