For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.
- Isaiah 30:15
In a world that values busyness and productivity, it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that our worth is tied to our output. We may even resort to unrighteous means in order to achieve our goals or get out of life's difficulties, thinking that the ends justify the means. But as the passage from Isaiah 30:15 reminds us, this kind of striving will only lead to disappointment. Instead, we are called to return (repent) from all unholy schemes and rest in the power of God to deliver us.
This idea of returning and resting in God is echoed throughout the Bible. Psalm 46:10 tells us to "be still, and know that I am God", while Matthew 11:28-30 invites us to "come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest... For my yoke is easy and my burden is light". When we put our trust in God, we can find true rest and peace, knowing that He is in control and that He will provide for us.
But what does it mean to wait on the Lord? Isaiah 40:31 offers a beautiful picture of what this looks like: "But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint." To wait on the Lord is to place our hope and trust in Him, to seek His guidance and provision, and to patiently wait for His timing. This is not a passive waiting, but an active one that involves prayer, faith, and obedience.
As we wait on the Lord, we can be confident in His ability to keep His promises. Hebrews 11:1 tells us that "faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen", and verse 6 adds that "without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him." Our faith in God's goodness and faithfulness can give us the strength and courage we need to face life's challenges.
Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!
- Psalm 27:14
Of course, waiting on the Lord is not always easy. Your heart needs courage just as the scripture above puts it. This is because we will be tempted to take matters into our own hands, to rely on our own strength and wisdom instead of God's. But Proverbs 3:5-6 gives this counsel;
When we submit to God's guidance and trust in His provision, we can experience the peace and security that comes from knowing that we are in His hands.
So today, let us heed the call to return and rest in God. Let us wait on Him with faith and patience, trusting in His goodness and provision. And let us remember the promise of Isaiah 30:15, that "in returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and confidence shall be your strength." May we find our strength and our hope in Him, and may we go forth with joy and confidence, knowing that He is with us every step of the way.
Say a word of prayer to God a you proceed into your day, asking for the courage to be able to return and wait on Him.
