THE VALUE OF SELF CONTROL

self control

But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.

                                          - 1 Corinthians 9:27

Self control is a vital aspect of a Christian's life, and it is an attribute that is well emphasized in the Bible.  Galatians 5:22-23 highlights the importance of self control as a fruit of the Holy Spirit, making  it  essential for a Christian to cultivate this virtue in their lives.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

                                               - Galatians 5:22-23

Self control is about controlling one's desires and impulses, but it is also about disciplining one's mind, body, and soul. It involves setting boundaries, making wise decisions, and having the determination to resist temptation. The Bible teaches us that self control is a discipline that must be practiced daily, and it is a discipline that will yield great rewards in our lives.

Self control is relevant to self-development and character building as it helps us to become the best version of ourselves. It allows us to make better decisions and avoid actions that could harm us or others. By having self control, we can also cultivate other important virtues such as patience, humility, and wisdom.

One of the key areas where self control is advantageous in life is in our relationships. When we have self control, we are able to control our emotions, thoughts, and actions in a way that benefits those around us. We can resist the urge to lash out in anger or say hurtful things, and instead, respond in a calm and loving manner. This can help to build stronger and more meaningful relationships with those around us.

Self control is also important in our spiritual lives. In our opening scripture, 1 Corinthians 9:27,  Paul was speaking in his letter to the Corinthian church. He says:

No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

This verse teaches us the importance of having self control as we engage in our spiritual assignment in the kingdom. It shows us that we must be aware of the need to exercise self control over our thoughts, actions and  passions if we really want to remain in the race we have been called to run. And with Self control we are able to resist temptation and live a life that gives honour to God.

Another area where self control is advantageous in life is that it protects your life from losses of all sorts. Without self control you make yourself vulnerable to all the mishaps that befall men.  -

Proverbs 25:28 says:

A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.

Taking finances for example, the bible is saying that without self control, you will be vulnerable to financial hardship and instability. And by having self control, you are able to make wise financial decisions, resist the urge to spend recklessly, and build a secure financial future for ourselves and your family.

I would like to conclude by saying that surely, self control is an important virtue that is necessary in our faith walk, and it is an attribute that every Christian should strive to cultivate in their lives, because it is advantageous in many areas of life. The success of our relationships, spiritual lives, and the preservation of all we might have laboured to build, depends on this virtue to a large extent.

So, my friend, I encourage you to imbibe  the discipline of self control today, and watch as it transforms your life for the better. This virtue is not far from you as a child of God, As the apostle Paul writes in 2 Timothy 1:7, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and self-discipline." May you have the courage and determination to embrace this virtue and live a life that is pleasing to God.
